Straight Outta Compton Review

I never thought of seeing the day of a N.W.A. biopic film. I really did not! Is this real? Am I dreaming? What is Li.. Oh wait a minute what does life have to do with the film?!…Oh wait.

Straight Outta Compton is based on the life story of the famous rap group “N.W.A.“. N.W.A was a game changer in music. In line with such music groups as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and The Beatles.  I never thought that there could be a film about this because…I just did not think there was an actual story to tell.

Someone please hit me in the head with a brick and tell me I am wrong! How is the film anyway? I know people are going to give me hate for this, but I’m split on it!

On one hand, I can see people really liking this film just on an entertainment level. On the other, I can see people finding problems with the actual story. To me, what was truly noteworthy of this film is its direction and its performances. Director F.Gary Gray brings a confident style to the film by coaxing intense and believable portrayals from O’Shea Jackson (Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre), Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E), Paul Giumatti (Jerry Heller), and the talented supporting cast. Gray packs the film by giving it a very intense drama field when it needs to while also creating an upbeat energetic style without being inconsistent. He also includes good music sequences. That might be due to the fact that most of Gray’s background is being a music video director.

However, the film suffers because Straight Outta Compton covers WAY TOO MUCH!! I am not going to spoil anything for those who do not know the actual story, but I can understand why the writers would go the ending they did, but so much time was covered getting there that I felt I was being dragged through a aimless field trip! The segments of the film showing how N.W.A formed, and the controversy and outrage their songs inspired was fascinating. Unfortunately, the plot of Straight Outta Compton goes downhill once Ice Cube decides to leave the group.

Straight Outta Compton plays the conventional and cliched route of most music biopics. One of the members (in this case Ice Cube) is more popular than the others, their ego blinds them to enemies at one point, and how about they started from being nobodies in a scum neighborhood. I know a lot of people will say: “this is what actually happened”. True, but its something I didn’t like, because its all things we’ve heard before.

In the end, if you are a fan of N.W.A., you will enjoy Straight Outta Compton! If you can overlook the problems with the Straight Outta Compton, you can easily be entertained GUARANTEED!!! Straight Outta Compton has an overlong and sadly conventional screenplay, but you could possibly forgive it because its entertaining and idealistic performances and the strong direction of F. Gary Gray.

Overall Grade: B-
